The entire 2012 theory was originally based on the Mayan calendar ending in December of 2012. I'm fairly certain that an advanced race such as the Mayans would then go on to their next calendar they'd carve that would start January 1, 2013. It's that simple, and people have been predicting the end of the world for as long as I can remember.
